One Killed in West Bank Car Blast
Sep. 29, 1998
BEITUNIA, West Bank (AP) _ A car exploded today in a Palestinian industrial area in the West Bank, and witnesses saw a covered body lying near the wrecked vehicle.
The Islamic militant group Hamas has threatened to carry out suicide bombings in Israel. Previously, there have been several incidents in which Hamas activists were either killed or injured while trying to rig a car with explosives in preparation for an attack.
Today's explosion came as Israel sealed the borders to the West Bank and Gaza Strip on the eve of the Yom Kippur holiday, or the Day of Atonement, which lasts from sundown today to sundown Wednesday.
Israel routinely imposes a closure on the Palestinian territories during Jewish holidays to prevent possible attacks by Palestinian militants.
