CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ Tim Whiteley's unassisted goal in the second quarter gave Virginia the lead for good Saturday and the Cavaliers went on to beat North Carolina 12-10 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA lacrosse tournament.

Fifth-seeded Virginia (12-3) will play No. 1 Syracuse next Saturday in a national semifinal in College Park, Md. The fourth-seeded Tar Heels (10-5) failed to reach the Final Four for the first time since 1988.

Whiteley, David Jones, Sean Miller and Michael Watson each scored twice for Virginia. North Carolina led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers went ahead 6-5 at halftime on Whiteley's goal.

Virginia stretched the lead to 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter, but North Carolina rallied on goals by Wilson Felter and Ousmane Greene to cut the lead to 10-9 with 6:23 remaining. Watson scored the winning goal 29 seconds later.

North Carolina's Gregg Langhoff had one goal and four assists.
