Rahman: King Has 'Best Deal'
May. 13, 2001
NEW YORK (AP) _ Hasim Rahman, the new IBF and WBC heavyweight champion, said he signed with promoter Don King because ``he gave me the best deal.''
Rahman made the comment during an interview with James Brown on TVKO at the William Joppy-Felix Trinidad fight Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Rahman is managed by Steve Nelson and Dan Hoffman, who also manage Joppy. Rahman's fifth-round knockout of Lennox Lewis on April 22 in South Africa was promoted by Cedric Kushner, who contends he still has a contract with Rahman.
``If mom had let me play football, I wouldn't be in all this,'' Rahman said about the controversies surrounding his contracts.
Lewis wants a rematch with Rahman, and Mike Tyson also wants to fight the new champion, but Rahman said he controls his own future.
``They won't force me just because they threaten to take me to court,'' Rahman said. ``They're not the champions anymore, They can't bully me.''
