Aug. 22, 2001
NEW YORK (AP) _ Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty, was evacuated Tuesday after a bomb threat, officials said. No bomb was found.
An anonymous threat was phoned to 911, said Cynthia Garrett, a spokeswoman for the Parks Service. About 3,400 tourists were evacuated as a precaution.
Park police searched the island, but no suspicious packages were found, Garrett said.
The island was to reopen Wednesday morning.
Ellis Island, which is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, was unaffected.
