VANCOUVER (AP) _ The Vancouver Canucks signed defenseman Mattias Ohlund to a contract extension Friday.

Ohlund scored eight goals and 20 assists in 65 games last season.

Terms of the multi-year deal were not announced. Ohlund was in the final year of a contract which paid him $1.9 million this season.

Vancouver's first choice, 13th overall in the 1994 draft, Ohlund has 28 goals and 86 assists in 259 NHL games since joining the team in 1997, when he finished second in rookie of the year voting.

Ohlund's career was threatened when he was hit in the eye with a puck during the 1999 exhibition season. He missed the first 38 games of the season but logged 21 minutes of ice time in his first game back.

He underwent surgery again on the same eye last year, missing 17 games, before returning to the lineup Nov. 28.
