NORMAL, Ill. (AP) _ Eric Johnson had two of Illinois State's six sacks and the Redbirds gave coach Todd Berry his first victory, 29-0 over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday night.
Chris Moore rushed 26 times for 134 yards and Lester Anderson passed for one touchdown and ran for another as Illinois State (1-2) spoiled Southeast's season opener.
In addition to Johnson, four Illinois State players registered sacks. The Redbirds' special teams also contributed, blocking a punt and a field goal.
The blocked punt led to the only score ISU would need, Anderson's 7-yard touchdown pass to Kenzye Henderson in the second quarter. Two minutes later, Moore's 9-yard run made it 12-0.
Berry, formerly East Carolina's offensive coordinator, was hired last December to replace the fired Jim Heacock. The Redbirds were 37-49-2 during Heacock's eight seasons.
Justin Martini passed for 163 yards for Southeast Missouri State, which was penalized 16 times for 109 yards and lost two fumbles.
