Former No. 1 Draft Choice Of Warriors Shot In Drug Neighborhood
Apr. 11, 1996
HICKORY, N.C. (AP) _ Chris Washburn, the No. 1 draft pick of the Golden State Warriors in 1986 who was later kicked out of the NBA for substance abuse, has been shot in the foot.
The shooting occurred in a part of Hickory known for drug activity, and Washburn was not seriously injured, police told Charlotte television station WBTV.
Hickory police said the 6-foot-10 Washburn gave authorities two different stories about the Tuesday night incident, in which the former North Carolina State star was shot.
Washburn first said it was an accident. He then told police he was shot by someone to whom he owed money.
The third overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft, Washburn played for the Warriors for a year and a half before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks. He played for the Hawks during the 1987-88 season and was then suspended by the league for substance abuse.
