BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ Damien Keogh scored 31 points, including the deciding 3-pointer with 16 seconds to play, as Australia beat Argentina 95-91 Wednesday night for third place in their quarterfinal group in the World Basketball Championships.
The victory was the first in the three-game quarterfinal round for Australia (3-3 overall). Argentina finished winless in the round and 2-4 in the tournament. Both will play in the classification round on Friday.
Australia appeared to have the game locked up when Luc Longley scored on a short bank shot with 5:09 left for a 90-76 lead.
Argentina then scored 13 straight points as Australia went cold from the field, getting within 90-89 with 47 seconds to play.
The run started with a jumper and three free throws by Julio Rodriguez. Marcelo Milanesio then hit a jumper and Carlos Romano hit two 3-pointers to end the burst, the latter from well behind the 20-foot, 6-inch line.
Keogh then ended the Australian shooting slump with his seventh 3-pointer of the game and Australia led 93-89 with 16 seconds left. Milanesio hit a jumper eight seconds later, but Australia ran out the clock as Phil Smyth laid the ball in at the buzzer.
Keogh was 7-of-11 from 3-point range and had four assists. Andrew Gaze and Longley each had 16 points and Longley, who will be a senior at New Mexico, had 11 rebounds.
Rodriguez led Argentina with 24 points.
