KNOKKE, Belgium (AP) _ Local favorite Sabine Appelmans upset top-seeded Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania 6-4, 6-3 on Monday in the first round of the Sanex Trophy.

``I've had some bad results recently, but now it feels good to win here in Belgium,'' said Appelmans, ranked No. 79 in the WTA Tour.

Dragomir is ranked 27th.

Fifth-seeded Cristine Torrens-Valero of Spain and seventh-seeded Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus also advanced in the clay-court tournament. Torrens-Valero beat Seda Noorlander of Netherlands 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Barabanschikova edged Bulgaria's Lubomira Bacheva 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In other matches, South Africa's Joannette Kruger beat Sweden's Asa Carlsson 6-4, 6-1; Spain's Marta Marrero defeated Michelle Gerards of the Netherlands 3-6, 6-3, 6-1; and Czech Denisa Chladkova edged Emilie Loit of France 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
