TORONTO (AP) _ Panagiotis Fassoulas had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Greece to a 68-58 victory Thursday over Germany on the opening day of the World Basketball Championships.
Greece took the lead for good at 42-39 on a 3-pointer by Giorgos Sigalas with 12:23 to play. That started a 10-0 run, capped by Fanis Christodoulo's 3- pointer with 10:50 left.
Germany, which led 35-31 at halftime, was able to get within four points twice, the last time on two free throws by Henrik Rodl with 3:23 left, but Christodoulo converted a three-point play with 2:11 left and Germany was never closer than seven again as Greece made five of eight free throws.
Christodoulo finished with 16 points, while Sigalas had 14.
Henning Harnisch led Germany with 16 points, while Hansi Gnad, a former Division II All-American at Alaska-Anchorage, had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
