OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Actress Jayne Meadows and her late husband comedian Steve Allen were honored for their support of World Neighbors, an international agency that works with the rural poor in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

The couple had been longtime contributors to the nonprofit Oklahoma City-based organization, which celebrated its 50th anniversary Saturday with a banquet and photo exhibit.

Meadows, the daughter of missionaries in China, said World Neighbors was ``strictly in Steve's heart. He was involved in every good cause.''

She said Allen once told her that helping others was more important than his own celebrity.

``I'm much more interested in the ratings of mankind,'' she recalled him saying.

Meadows also was at local bookstores to promote Allen's book, ``Vulgarians at the Gate.''

Allen died Oct. 30, a few hours after he ruptured a blood vessel in a minor traffic accident.
