NEW YORK (AP) _ Actor James Cagney has left a Manhattan hospital to return to his farm after failing to respond well to treatment for a serious circulatory ailment, according to a spokesman for the 86-year-old film star.
Cagney, who was admitted to Lenox Hill Hospital earlier this month to be treated for an ailment associated with his chronic diabetes, was taken back to his farm in Duchess County ''to be among the surroundings he loves,'' Marge Zimmermann, his secretary and confidante, told the New York Daily News.
''He is comfortable most of the time,'' she said Monday. ''We ask that his friends and his fans offer up lots of prayers for him, especially during this Easter season.''
Cagney's wife of 64 years, Willy, was caring for him at their home.
Cagney, whose acting career spans six decades, first retired from films in 1961. He suffered a stroke in 1977, but bounced back in 1981 and left his farm to film ''Ragtime'' in New York City and in England.
