NEW YORK (AP) _ The mother of Mark Messier's 10-year-old son is fighting the NHL star in Manhattan Family Court in an attempt to boost monthly child support payments from $1,500 to $10,000, the Daily News reported today.

Leslie Young of Fairfax, Va., who filed a successful paternity suit against Messier in 1988, claims she is entitled to more money, in part because the boy has minor learning difficulties and attends a private school.

Messier is in the first year of a three-year, $20 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

Young, a former model who supports herself as an X-ray technician, is represented by Eleanor Alter, who represented actress Mia Farrow in her custody battle with Woody Allen.

``This is a private matter,'' Phillip Hoffman, Messier's attorney, said after Wednesday's hearing. ``It has not been resolved.''
