WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) — A Wetumpka police officer has been indicted on a manslaughter charge for an on-duty crash that killed a woman last year.
WSFA-TV reports Officer Andrew Bass surrendered Wednesday to deputies at the Elmore County Sheriff's Office where he was served an arrest warrant.
An Elmore County grand jury indicted him last week. The decision stemmed from a fatal crash on Oct. 22 that claimed the life of 52-year-old Elaine Merritt, when her 2016 Honda Pilot collided with a 2010 Dodge Charger driven by Bass.
Bass was reportedly responding to an emergency call, traveling in excess of 90 miles per hour, but was not running lights and sirens on his police cruiser.
There's no word on a date for his arraignment. His bond was set at $35,000.
