MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) _ Still faced with a slump in sales, handheld device maker Handspring Inc. reported Monday a wider-than-expected third-quarter loss.

The Mountain View-based company said in the three months ended March 30, it lost $23.7 million, or 18 cents a share, on $59.7 million in revenue. In the comparable period a year ago, Handspring lost $27.2 million, or 26 cents per share, on sales of $123.8 million.

Excluding amortization of deferred stock compensation and other items, the company reported a pro forma loss of $19.2 million, or 14 cents per share.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call were expecting a loss of 12 cents per share on revenue of $64.6 million.

Before the financial report, Handspring shares were up 37 cents, or 11 percent, to close at $3.72 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, but fell 52 cents, or nearly 14 percent, in extended trading.
