FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ Shane Hurd came up with two interceptions for the Canisius defense and helped his team defeat Fairfield 21-0 Saturday.
Canisius (5-0, 4-0) got on the board early, capping off a six-play 29-yard drive with a 1-yard run by Nick Adinolfi.
The two squads played to a stalemate, trading punts and turnovers, until strong safety Marty Chuttey picked off a pass from Stag quarterback Jim Lopusznick and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown.
The score put Canisius 14-0 ahead of Fairfield (0-6, 0-4) with less than nine minutes remaining in the game.
On Fairfield's next to last drive, Lopusznick took his team from their own 35-yard line to the Canisius 32-yard line where he was picked off by Shane Hurd at the 10-yard line on a third and nine pass.
Hurd returned the interception 90 yards for a touchdown to seal the game at 21-0 with less than a minute remaining.
Fairfield linebacker Stephen Krines had a game high of 14 tackles.
