RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ North Carolina State guard Anthony Grundy, the team's leading scorer last season, was acquitted Monday on a charge of assaulting a female acquaintance.

Grundy was arrested in January after Makazi Mtingwa told police she had been assaulted.

N.C. State coach Herb Sendek allowed Grundy to continue playing with the team while the case was resolved.

In a statement issued by the university Monday, Grundy thanked Sendek and athletic director Lee Fowler for standing behind him.

``Their belief and trust in me has meant more than anyone will know,'' Grundy said. ``I'm just so thankful that their trust in me was backed up today by the judicial system, and that I can now focus on academics and basketball.''
