DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) _ The wife of Prime Minister Maudud Ahmed was attacked by anti-government students Monday and her car was set ablaze, but she was not injured, witnesses said.

Hasna Maudud had her sari torn in the scuffle, the witnesses said.

Mrs. Maudud, a Parliament member of the ruling Jatiya Party, was attacked inside the Dhaka University campus when she went to attend the annual meeting of the university senate as a government nominee.

The students set her car ablaze and beat up her chauffeur. A security guard also was attacked by the students when he tried to protect Mrs. Maudud, according to the witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

''We did not know that the prime minister's wife was coming to attend the meeting. We were not informed or we would have taken precautionary measures,'' said Mustafizur Rahman, a senior professor at the university.

An hour after the attack, about 50 students marched on campus, shouting anti-government slogans. Two homemade bombs exploded as they passed the vice- chancellor's office, but no one was injured, witnesses said.

Dhaka University is a major center of opposition to the government of President Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
