JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ Willie Simmons scored 14 points and blocked three shots as No. 10 Lousiana Tech defeated Arkansas State 100-67 and clinched the Southland Conference regular-season basketball title Saturday night.
Louisiana Tech shot 68.3 percent from the field before a record crowd of 4,879 in Indian Fieldhouse.
Simmons, a 6-foot-10, senior center, set a new Southland Conference single season blocked shot record with his three blocks against the Indians, raising his total to 77.
The Bulldogs, 24-2 overall and 10-1 in the conference, also had 15 points from Karl Malone and 14 from Robert Godbolt. Malone and Simmons each grabbed six rebounds.
Louisiana Tech broke from a 2-2 tie and ran off eight straight points and was never challenged after that as they built up a 41-24 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs quashed any thought of a second-half comeback by tallying eight unanswered points at the beginning of the period.
Arkansas State, 13-12 and 6-5, was led by freshman Allan Smith, who came off the bench to score 18 points, while Marchie Murdock added 11.
