LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in Florida say a vehicle struck and killed a woman on a scooter and a second vehicle hit an active-duty member of the U.S. Army who stopped to help. Both drivers left the scene without stopping.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the crashes occurred early Thursday near Lakeland in central Florida.
Officials say 40-year-old Kelly Marie Black died from her injuries and 20-year-old Kalen Lawson suffered a serious leg injury. He was expected to undergo surgery on Thursday.
The news release says 28-year-old Corey Jones was driving the vehicle that hit Black. Deputies located the vehicle and spoke to Jones by phone. He told investigators he plans to turn himself in Thursday.
Authorities are looking for the driver of the second vehicle.
