MALDEN, Mass. (AP) — The state board of education has approved three new charter schools and eight charter school expansions in Massachusetts, and is expected to vote on the remaining finalists on Tuesday.
The board voted Monday night to approve City on a Hill charter schools in Boston and New Bedford, and the UP Academy charter school in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. It will vote on two more new school proposals Tuesday.
The board also approved expansion requests Monday for eight existing charter schools in Boston. Board members will consider three remaining expansion requests from charter schools outside Boston, including Lawrence and western Massachusetts, on Tuesday.
The charter school requests were recommended for approval by Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester.
