ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Police in Albany say a 21-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a man last week.

Albany police officials say Lahquann Grady was arrested following an investigation into the death of 29-year-old Rashaun Byrd last Thursday. Resident Beverly Padgett tells the Times Union of Albany that Byrd was a good person who was preventing a girl from being beaten up when he was stabbed.

Byrd's killing occurred amid a rash of violence in Albany that also included the killing last Saturday of Elijah Cancer, an anti-violence activist who was shot as he tried to break up a fight.

Grady was arraigned Monday in Albany City Criminal Court and was sent to the county jail without bail. The public defender handling his case couldn't be reached for comment.
