TOKYO (AP) — World champion Kosuke Hagino of Japan will not compete at the swimming worlds after breaking his right elbow in training.
Hagino was injured when he fell off a bike at the national team's training camp in France. He returned to Japan on Thursday, when he was diagnosed.
"It's very regrettable because my form was improving," the 20-year-old Hagino said on Friday.
At last year's worlds in Doha, he won the 200-meter individual medley, and a silver medal in the 400 IM.
He won the 2012 Olympic bronze in the 400 IM, and four golds at the 2014 Asian Games.
The worlds in Kazan, Russia, begin on July 24.
