TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) _ Tom Allison kicked three field goals and three extra points Saturday night as Indiana State beat Western Illinois in the Gateway Conference.

The Sycamores (3-1, 1-0 in the Gateway) opened a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard TD pass from Kevin Cox to Larry Gauer in the first quarter and never trailed. The Leathernecks (2-2, 0-1) tied the game 30 seconds into the second quarter on a 2-yard Antwon Kimbrough touchdown run.

Allison kicked a pair of second-quarter field goals (29 and 39 yards) to give Indiana State a 13-7 halftime lead.

Richard Moss intercepted a Jeff Hecklinski pass and returned it 4 yards for the score with 11:34 to play in the third period to give the Sycamores a 20-7 lead.

After Western Illinois scored its last TD on a 6-yard pass from Hecklinski to Kris Heddings, Indiana State capped scoring with 37-yard Jason Potter TD run and a 42-yard field goal by Allison.

Indiana State gained 277 total yards, and the Leathernecks gained 276, but Hecklinski threw three interceptions. He completed 22-of-34 passes for 161 yards.

Brian Knuckles rushed for 101 yards on 26 carries to lead Western Illinois.

Cox completed 14-of-23 passes for 130 yards.
