MOSCOW (AP) _ Tajik authorities ended a hostage crisis Saturday, freeing three rebels in exchange for five officials seized by guerrillas.

The prisoner exchange occurred after mediation by Tajikistan's National Reconciliation Commission, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported from Dushanbe, the Tajik capital.

Rebels under the command of Rakhmon Sanginov seized the five government officials early Saturday to press the government for the release of their fellow guerrillas, who had been detained Wednesday for illegal weapons possession.

The five officials included Dushanbe's deputy mayor, ITAR-Tass reported.

The government and rebels reached a peace agreement in June after almost five years of civil war, but splinter guerrilla groups opposed to the accord continue to operate.
