Shots Fired in North Miami School
Sep. 29, 1998
NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) _ A teen-age boy got past school security with a gun Tuesday and fired, wounding two students and a teacher and sending people running for cover.
The injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.
``I saw everybody running outside,'' said Virginia Mondelus, a 17-year-old senior at North Miami Senior High School. ``I didn't believe it at first ...''
Police believe the shooting was in retaliation for a fight that took place outside the school Monday, but they were not sure who the intended victim was.
Detective Kathleen Ruggiero said two teen-age boys were being sought and one may be a former student.
The school of 3,400 students has several security guards, and security cameras are located throughout the school.
At least one shot was fired in a hallway outside the cafeteria. All three injuries were caused by a single bullet, which struck a female teacher in the hand, hit a female student in the upper thigh and grazed another female student in the neck.
