WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Washington Capitals claimed right wing Andreas Salomonsson off waivers from New Jersey on Tuesday.

To make room for Salomonsson, the Capitals reassigned left wing Matt Pettinger to Portland of the AHL.

The 28-year-old Salomonsson had four goals and five assists in 39 games with the Devils last season, his first in the NHL. The Swedish native also had three goals and 10 assists in 19 games with Albany of the AHL.

Prior to coming to North America, Salomonsson had 79 goals and 86 assists in 11 seasons in the Swedish league. He played 10 seasons with Modo before joining Djurgardens IF for their 2001 Swedish Hockey Championship run.

Salomonsson will join the Capitals on Thursday night in Carolina, the second in an eight-game road trip.
