HOUSTON (AP) _ Tina Thompson and Janeth Arcain each scored 22 points as the Houston Comets extended their winning streak to eight games with a 67-57 victory over the Portland Fire on Sunday.
Houston's only loss of the season came in its season-opener against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Arcain scored 16 points in the second half. She had six points in an 8-0 run to close out the game after Portland closed within 59-57.
``This just feels good,'' Arcain said. ``We beat a tough team tonight. I think that shows just how good we can be.''
Jackie Stiles shot 7-for-15 and led Portland with 17 points. Sophia Witherspoon added 14 for the Fire, who lost for the third time in nine games.
``We knew if we let them get confident, they'd be tough,'' Witherspoon said. ``We knew we had a chance to win this game, and that kind of leaves a sour taste in our mouth.''
Houston trailed by seven after two minutes. Thompson keyed a rally by the Comets, scoring 12 of her 18 first-half points in a 20-6 run.
Portland countered with an 11-7 surge, capped by a free throw by Stiles, and closed within 27-24 with 4:57 left in the half.
Houston responded with a 10-point run, punctuated by Coquese Washington's 3-pointer.
Witherspoon forced a turnover and hit a 3-pointer that cut Houston's lead 10 points, and her layup with 48 seconds left in the half got the Fire within six points at the break.
