BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A Montana man convicted of killing a woman on New Year's Eve in 2016 has been sentenced to 40 years for attempting to break out of prison.
The Billings Gazette reported Thursday that the state recommended the 40-year sentence for Jay Donald Witkowski and agreed to drop other charges under a plea deal.
Valley County Sheriff Vern Buerkle says Witkowski and another inmate overpowered a detention officer in August and stole her keys in an attempt to escape.
In the murder case, Witkowski was convicted of stabbing 31-year-old Evelynn Garcia before hitting her with a tire iron and later a car. Garcia's body was found on the side of a road outside Glasgow.
