New Ramsey ad reveals letters from ransom note
Aug. 04, 1997
DENVER (AP) _ The parents of JonBenet Ramsey took out their second full-page advertisement in the past two weeks, this one with handwriting samples from the ransom note and the question: ``DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS HANDWRITING?''
The advertisement Sunday in the (Boulder) Daily Camera includes individual letters from the note found in the Ramsey's home hours before the body of 6-year-old JonBenet was discovered on Dec. 26. She had been strangled and an autopsy report indicates she may have been sexually abused.
John and Patsy Ramsey also plan to release handwritten phrases from the note, including ``Don't try to grow a brain, John,'' and ``small foreign faction,'' Newsweek reports in this week's issue.
The news magazine also reports that the Ramseys have told private investigators to conduct surveillance on several possible suspects in their daughter's death. It did not name the possible suspects.
The Ramseys have not been ruled out as suspects in their daughter's death. Patsy Ramsey has given police five handwriting samples, but authorities said they still can't tell whether she wrote the ransom note. John Ramsey was ruled out as the note's author.
``These letters are from the note left behind by the killer of JonBenet Ramsey. We understand that a positive identification of handwriting cannot be made from limited samples, but we are hopeful that the writing samples you provide might assist us,'' the ad says.
The Ramseys' ad last week listed characteristics private investigators said the killer may have displayed including: conflict with a female or employment problems before the killing and increased alcohol or drug use and obsession with news reports of the crime after it.
Family spokeswoman Rachelle Zimmer did not return phone calls seeking comment.
