CHAPEL HILL (AP) _ Charlotte Smith scored 20 points and No. 8 North Carolina opened its season with a 92-52 victory Wednesday night over UNC-Asheville 92-52 in women's basketball.

Sylvia Crawley had 17 points, Marion Jones had 16 points, Tonya Sampson 13 and Tonya Cooper 10 for the Tar Heels.

Beth Matthews led the Bulldogs (1-2) with 13 points and Vicki Griffin had 11.

Freshman point guard Lori Gear started for the injured Jill Suddreth and led the Tar Heels to a 34-9 edge midway through the first half.

The Tar Heels shot 52 percent from the floor and forced 33 turnovers, while the Bulldogs shot 38 percent from the floor.
