Clement Loses in First Round

HALLE, Germany (AP) _ Former champion Nicolas Kiefer eliminated fourth-seeded Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-4 in Tuesday's first round of the Gerry Weber Open, a major tuneup for Wimbledon.
Kiefer won Germany's only grass-court tournament in 1999, while Clement was runner-up at the Australian Open in January.
Elsewhere, Fabrice Santoro beat Germany's Alexander Popp, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist, 6-2, 6-3. Popp is attempting a comeback after a long virus ailment.
Lars Burgsmueller defeated French qualifier Cyril Saulnier 7-6 (2), 6-2, Rainer Schuettler of Germany edged Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 6-4, 6-4, Nicolas Escude of France downed doubles specialist Daniel Nestor of Canada 6-1, 6-2, and Andrei Pavel of Romania beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-3.
