FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — State police say an explosive device found in the parking lot of a Massachusetts apartment complex detonated while a robot was trying to give the bomb squad a closer look.
No injuries were reported and an investigation in Fall River is continuing.
A state police spokesman says the "improvised explosive pipe-style device" was discovered inside a container around 8 p.m. Thursday near a parked vehicle.
The bomb squad employed a robot to approach the device but as it was moving the cover of the container the device went off.
Officials reported the detonation caused some minor damage to one apartment unit and a nearby vehicle.
City and state police along with the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating. Terrorism is not suspected.
