U.S. Soccer Blocks Charity Game
Apr. 19, 2002
CHICAGO (AP) _ The U.S. Soccer Federation blocked a charity exhibition at Giants Stadium to raise money for Sept. 11-related causes because it would have been played too close to a national team game there.
Scottish club Glasgow Celtic and Italian club AC Milan planned to play May 14, two days before the United States faces Jamaica in a warmup for the World Cup. The federation has strict rules governing when games can be scheduled.
``The key is to help grow the game as much as possible and if one game affects the attendance of another game that could be a detriment,'' federation spokesman Jim Moorhouse said Friday.
