NEW YORK (AP) _ Frederic Niemeyer of Canada defeated Davis Cup player Prakash Amritraj of India 6-4, 7-6 (3) Sunday to win the Forest Hills Grass Court Classic.
Niemeyer, an eight-year pro, earned his second Challenger title this season and fourth overall. He lost in the second round of doubles at Wimbledon last week and thought about skipping the tournament.
``I really didn't expect to win this week,'' Niemeyer said. ``My flight was canceled last Friday when I was returning from Wimbledon. By the time I finally arrived home, I was mentally drained.''
Niemeyer did not face a break and returned well against Amritraj.
``My return was solid, and in the tiebreaker I had three winners off it,'' he said.
In the doubles final, Huntley Montgomery and Richard Barker rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6-(6) win over Nathan Healey and Rik de Voest.
