LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) _ Eric Traylor scored 20 points as New Mexico State held off a late rally by Southern Utah to beat the Thunderbirds 87-80 Wednesday night.
The Aggies (2-0) squandered a 20-point second-half lead as Southern Utah (1-1) cut the margin to five points in the final minute. Dana Achtzehn and Davor Marcelic each finished with 22 points.
Achtzehn scored six of the Thunderbirds' final 10 points, while Marcelic, who was 0-5 in the first half, scored all 22 of his points in the second half, including four 3-pointers.
Malcolm Leak scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for New Mexico State, and senior Chris Hickman hit two free throws with 29 seconds left to give NMSU the final margin.
