Incarnate Word sweeps FBCA 25-9, 25-15, 25-18
HOUSTON - Across the street from Minute Maid Park is a pretty dandy volleyball program. And that program strutted its stuff at the expense of Pasadena-First Baptist Christian Academy Tuesday night.
Klein High School transfer Meriam Scafide racked up 12 kills to go with a handful of blocks and strong serving to help Incarnate Word High School defeat the Lady Warriors 3-0 in the Falcon Gym.
The Lady Falcons won by scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-18.
The Lady Warriors never led, suffering from slow starts in all three games. But at the same time, FBCA was still in the hunt midway through all three games.
In Game 1, Incarnate Word was only up 13-9 but that’s when the home team scored 12 consecutive points.
Mary Turner did the honors from the serving line, while such teammates as Page Rhodes and Scafide kept her there with kills. At one point in the rampage, the two girls used kills to score five out of six points.
In Game 2, the Lady Falcons roared out to a 9-2 advantage. Angelica Sanchez and Turner served tough for the first six points and Scafide held serve for points eight and nine.
FBCA did a nice job of trimming an eight-point deficit down to three at 17-14, but that’s when the rally died.
Scafide collected back-to-back ills and Rhodes followed with one of her kills off a Sanchez pass to get the lead back to six.
Game 3 saw the home team grab a 6-0 advantage and again FBCA weathered the storm by trimming the deficit to 13-9 only to have Incarnate Word regain the momentum by scoring seven straight points.
