Matthew Berry thinks Derrius Guice in for big fantasy year
ESPN football fantasy analyst Matthew Berry is all in on Derrius Guice.
Appearing on the Bill Simmons Podcast, Berry named the Redskins running back as his favorite rookie running back not named Saquon Barkley for this upcoming fantasy football season and it’s “not close,” he said.
“When they get in close (to score), [coach] Jay Gruden likes to run the ball,” Berry said. “Whatever you think of Jay Gruden I actually think Jay Gruden is a good coach but whatever you think ... his offenses have always scored. They’ve always scored points.
“And Derrius Guice, people were talking about him going in the top 13 and then there were ‘off the field rumors’ or whatever. ... And they love him in Washington. And again talking (with them), they love him. That’s a guy who’s going to get the ball early and often on an offense that’s going to score.”
Berry acknowledged that he is a Redskins fan, but pointed out that running backs Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley combined for the third-most goal-to-go rushing attempts despite Washington’s patchwork offensive line and run struggles.
That would suggest Guice will get plenty of work around the goal line, which would make his fantasy owners happy.
“He’s my fantasy ‘Ride or Die,’” Berry said. “Last year, it was (Kansas City Chiefs running back) Kareem Hunt. This year, it’s Derrius Guice.”
