Clemson 8, Oklahoma St. 5, 10th inning
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Jason Embler’s RBI single keyed a three-run 10th inning as Clemson snapped its eight-game losing streak at the College World Series and eliminated Oklahoma State with an 8-5 victory Sunday night.
Fourth-seeded Clemson (50-16) will meet top seed Alabama (50-18) Tuesday afternoon. Alabama lost 15-1 earlier Sunday to Miami. The No. 5 Hurricanes (49-13) are off until Wednesday, when they will meet the Alabama-Clemson survivor.
Clemson came to Sunday’s game trying to avoid its fourth straight trip to Omaha without a win. The Tigers had lost eight straight at the CWS dating back to 1977.
OSU (45-21) had lost its first two at the CWS only once before in 18 trips, and that was in 1967.
The Cowboys tied the game at 5 in the eighth inning, but Clemson scored three in the 10th. OSU reliever Dave Mauer (6-3) issued a walk and a double to Matthew LeCroy before Brian Thomas relieved and allowed Embler’s go-ahead hit. Thomas allowed another run on Paul Galloway’s fielder’s choice grounder and Jerome Robinson added an RBI single.
Clemson grabbed a 3-0 lead with Kurt Bultmann’s solo homer in the first and two unearned runs in the second.
OSU pulled to 3-2 in the second when Clemson starter Billy Koch walked two and Ryan Folmar hit a RBI single to center. The other run scored on a throwing error by Tigers center fielder Rusty Rhodes.
OSU tied the game at 3 in the third on Wyley Steelmon’s sacrifice fly.
Cowboy starter Sean McClellan gave the lead back in the fourth when he walked three straight after Will Duffie’s one-out single. Galloway’s fifth homer in the fifth gave Clemson a two-run lead.
Clemson reliever Brian Matz walked three in the eighth after a leadoff single to Jamey Wood and a force out. A one-out walk to .208-hitting pinch-hitter Cory Smith brought the run home. David Shepard (3-2) relieved and allowed a game-tying sacrifice fly to right by Tripp MacKay.
Galloway had four hits and drove in two for the Tigers.
