Kenya’s Benson Masya wins Stockholm Marathon

June 7, 1997

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) _ Kenya’s Benson Masya held off Aleksander Prokopchuk of Latvia by 29 seconds to win the Stockholm Marathon Saturday.

Masya completed the 26-mile, 385-yard race held on one of the world’s most scenic courses, in a relatively slow 2 hours, 17 minutes, 22 seconds. Only two of the 19 previous races had slower winning times, but organizers made the course tougher this year.

Finishing third at Olympic Stadium was Anders Szalkai of Sweden in 2:19.17 with Geoffrey Kinyua of Kenya fourth in 2:19.35 and Bigboy Goromonzi of Zimbabwe fifth in 2:20.21.

Anita Hakenstad won the women’s division in 2:33.26, heading a Norwegian 1-2-3 sweep.

Masya, the world’s top road racer in 1993, won the Stockholm Half Marathon last year and was twice runnerup in the grueling Lidingoloppet outside Stockholm, the world’s largest cross-country race. He is a former three-time winner of the Honolulu Marathon.

Swedish-based Mica Comstock, one of 59 American starters in Saturday’s race, finished 19th in 2:30.52.

More than 12,000 runners from 41 countries were registered for the race.
