MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Minnesota Twins designated hitter Paul Molitor is recovering from hernia surgery and should be ready around the time spring training starts, the team physician says.
Molitor, 41, suffered a double hernia in a home-plate collision last April in Kansas City. He underwent the surgery Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.
``In a sense, I’m relieved because I’ve had this (double hernia) since the collision,″ said Molitor, who agreed to a $4.15 million one-year contract with the Twins last month. ``After the season, I tried to find out what was going on. (Doctors) thought rest would take care of it, but it persisted.″
Twins physician John Steubs sent him to specialist Dr. Joseph D’Acca, who performed laparoscopic surgery.
``Dr. D’Acca thought he should be ready to go by spring training or shortly thereafter,″ Steubs said Thursday.
