LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — A 12-year-old boy has lost part of his leg after he was hit by a train in Lowell.

Police say the boy and his friends were attempting to jump onto a slow-moving freight train early Sunday afternoon when he slipped. The Pan Am Railways then ran over his leg.

The boy was taken to Lowell General Hospital. He was then transferred to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Police say his injuries are not life-threatening.

Trains are only allowed to reach a top speed of 10 mph in the area.

Transit police detectives are investigating.
