GALLUP, N.M. (AP) _ A police officer was killed in a shootout Wednesday with a man who surrendered after an 11-hour standoff.
Robert Kiro was arrested after he came out of his mobile home at 9:20 a.m. with his hands up, said Gallup police Capt. Bobby Silva.
Police arrived at the home shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call that shots had been fired. Kiro and his girlfriend had argued, Silva said, but the woman left the home with the couple’s children before the shooting.
Officer Larry Brian Mitchell was fatally shot around 6 a.m. when he and fellow SWAT team members stormed the mobile home, state police Capt. Glenn Thomas said.
A Gallup police officer was shot in the back but his bullet proof vest saved him from serious injury, Silva said.
