Gebremeskel wins Carlsbad 5000 3rd straight time
CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia won the Carlsbad 5000 for the third straight time on Sunday, in a time of 13 minutes, 21 seconds.
Gebremeskel, the silver medalist in the 5,000 meters at the London Olympics, and John Kipkoech of Kenya were the only runners who went along with a strong surge by Yenew Alamirew of Ethiopia early in the race. Gebremeskel made his move with a half-mile to go.
Kipkoech was second in 13:26, 1 second ahead of Alamirew.
Will Leer of Claremont was the top U.S. finisher in fourth place, clocking 13:36.
Ethiopian Geleta Burka outlasted Kenyans Mercy Cherono and Paskalia Kipkoech to win the women’s race in 15:26. Cherono was second and Kipkoech third, both in 15:28.
