No. 13 Alabama 82, Mount St. Mary’s 55

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) _ Niesa Johnson scored 20 points Thursday night and No. 13 Alabama coasted to an 82-55 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the first round of the NCAA East Regional.

Mount St. Mary’s (24-6), the No. 13 seed, scored the first five points of the game, but quickly fell behind by double digits and trailed by as many as 30.

The fourth-seeded Crimson Tide (21-8) faces No. 5 seed Duke on Saturday.

Johnson and Yolanda Watkins scored 23 of Alabama’s 35 first points on the way to a 35-24 halftime lead. The Tide then opened the second half with a 14-5 run, making it 49-29 on a short turnaround by Sarah Smith with 14:10 remaining.

Alabama opened its biggest lead when Marlene Stevenson sank two free throws to make it 78-48 with 3:51 to play.

Smith finished with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. Watkins had 11, al in the first half.

Shari DeLaney led Mount St. Mary’s with 15 points. Melissa Cuneo added 11, including three 3-pointers, and Susie Rowlyk had 10.
