Democratic Reps. Lieu and Beyer call on DOJ to criminally investigate Jared Kushner

March 5, 2019

Two Democratic congressmen called on the Justice Department Tuesday to criminally investigate Jared Kushner for omissions made during his security clearance process.

Reps. Ted Lieu, a member of the Judiciary Committee, and Don Beyer urged the new attorney general William Barr to look into whether or not Mr. Kushner made false statements on his security applications.

“Ultimately, the President and his son-in-law have made a mockery of the security clearance process,” they wrote. “Their actions put U.S. national security at risk and offend the thousands of dedicated career officials who both grant and receive clearances the correct way.”

Mr. Lieu and Mr. Beyer contend that Mr. Kushner omitted certain foreign contacts and meetings on his application, including with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Recently, reports surfaced that President Trump granted security clearance for his son-in-law and senior advisor despite concerns from other top officials in the administration, including former White House Counsel Don McGahn and former chief of staff John Kelly.

In previous interviews, the president, his daughter Ivanka Trump, and an attorney for Mr. Kushner have all denied Mr. Trump intervened in the security clearance process.
