UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ Kevin Dinnen scored twice and Jason Muzzati stopped 20 shots in his first start in goal this season as the Hartford Whalers beat the New York Islanders 3-1 Thursday night.

Sami Kapanen also scored for Hartford, who won its first game with newcomers Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey in the lineup, and continued its unbeaten streak against New York. The Whalers are currently 6-0-1 against the Islanders since a 3-1 loss on Mar. 7, 1995.

Derek King scored for the Islanders, who have just 11 goals in their five games this season.

Dineen gave the Whalers a 1-0 lead at 12:56 of the first as he beat Tommy Salo with a one-timer high in the net.

The Whalers held the Islanders to one shot for over 15 minutes of the second period, and increased their lead to 2-0. While on their second power play, Dineen tipped a center-point shot from Geoff Sanderson past Salo at 13:17.

Muzzati was rarely tested for the first 40 minutes. His only close call came when King hit the left post with five minutes left in the first period.

King finally beat Muzzati at 9:53 of the third, as his slap shot from the right circle richocheted off the goalie’s glove. But Kapanen answered 21 seconds later with his own goal off Salo’s glove.

Salo stopped 20 shots before he was relieved by Tommy Soderstrom with 1:35 left.
