Two military members charged with trying to entice minors for sex
Two members of the military have been charged with trying to entice a minor for sex after they were caught in undercover stings, records show.
Randy Gene Breland, 25, who is in the Air National Guard in Mississippi, and Kevin Raymond Smith, 42, a first sergeant in the Army, were arrested in recent investigations by agents with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
The pair used social media applications to lure who they believed to be 14-year-old girls for sex, court records allege. The “girls” were fake online personas created by undercover investigators, records show.

Both defendants were repeatedly told that the girls were 14, but persisted in their advances, according to criminal complaint affidavits filed against them.
They even used their membership in the military to try to entice the “girls,” according to the affidavits.
Breland was in town for training at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. While at one of the base’s medical training buildings, he sent pictures of himself in uniform to the “girl” and one of his penis. He also sent explicit messages and tried to arrange a meeting for sex.
Smith also delivered explicit messages to the “girl” he chatted with online and suggested they meet at a park on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, where he would pick her up and take her to his San Antonio home for sex.
Both were arrested by agents who met them.
Smith had his initial appearance Friday, and is scheduled for a bail hearing Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth “Betsy” Chestney. Breland had his initial court hearing Tuesday, and is scheduled for his bail hearing this Friday.
If convicted of attempted coercion or enticement, each faces 10 years to life in prison and a lifetime of federal supervision.
