GRAMMYS MAKE UP GROUND WITH RAP ARTISTS, WOMEN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rap artists and women. Both groups have complained in recent years that they get no love from the Grammys. But you’d be hard-pressed to hear any complaints like that this year. In the rap category, Childish Gambino’s take on race relations won big. “This is America” won both record and song of the year. It’s the first time that a rap song won both of those awards. On the women’s side, Kacey Musgraves won top album, one of her four wins, tying her with Childish Gambino for the night. Despite the advances, there are still some old wounds that need healing. Both Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar declined to attend or perform. And during her acceptance speech, best new artist winner Dua Lipa threw shade at departing Grammy head Neil Portnow, who said last year that if women wanted more Grammy wins, they need to “step up.” As she accepted her best new artist award, Dua Lipa said, “I guess this year we really stepped up.” Later, her mike was cut off in mid-sentence.

CARDI B SCORES FIRST GRAMMY WIN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Not only did Cardi B win her first-ever Grammy last night — she made history in the process. Her best album win for “Invasion of Privacy” makes her the first solo woman to win best rap album. A clearly shocked Cardi B struggled to regain her composure after her win was announced, saying, “Oh, my goodness...whoa, child.” She said her nerves were so bad, maybe she needed “to start smoking weed.” Cardi B is just the fifth woman nominated in the rap album category, which has been around since 1995.

CHRIS CORNELL WINS POSTHUMOUS GRAMMY

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Bittersweet.” That is how Chris Cornell’s daughter is describing her late father’s Grammy win. Toni and Christopher Cornell accepted the award during the pre-telecast awards ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The win was for best rock performance for “When Bad Does Good.” It’s a song that’s part of an album of unreleased music Cornell’s estate put out last year. Cornell died in 2017; his death was ruled a suicide.

JENNIFER LOPEZ - MOTOWN TRIBUTE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — She may have drawn flak for signing up for the gig. But Jennifer Lopez’s performance at a Motown tribute during the Grammys did right by the legendary label. J-Lo injected her dance-pop flow into Motown hits like “Dancing Machine” and “Dancing in the Street.” She teamed with Smokey Robinson on “My Girl,” a song he co-wrote for The Temptations. She paired with Alicia Keys on “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and did Stevie Wonder’s “Another Star” with Ne-Yo. J-Lo’s lead spot in the Motown tribute was criticized by some online who felt a black artist should have been chosen to help trace the history of the iconic label founded by Berry Gordy.

OSCARS-PRESENTERS TO INCLUDE ‘BLACK PANTHER’ STARS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Who needs a host when Wakanda is coming to the Academy Awards? “Black Panther” stars Chadwick Boseman and Angela Bassett have been added to the starry list of presenters for the 91st Oscars. Producer Donna Gigliotti and co-producer and director Glenn Weiss on Monday announced a new batch of talent confirmed to take the stage at the Dolby Theater on Feb. 24 including Samuel L. Jackson, Javier Bardem, Emilia Clarke, James McAvoy, Laura Dern, Sarah Paulson and Melissa McCarthy. “If Beale Street Could Talk” stars Stephan James and KiKi Layne will also be presenting, as will “Aquaman” himself, Jason Momoa. They’ll join the previously announced roster of talent like Jennifer Lopez, Daniel Craig and last year’s acting trophy winners Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney.

FORMER FLEETWOOD MAC GUITARIST RECOVERING FROM HEART SURGERY

LOS ANGELES (AP) — They may not have parted on best of terms. But members of Fleetwood Mac are wishing the best for former guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who is facing some health issues. The band has released a statement pulling for Buckingham, who had open heart surgery last week. And while he’s home recovering, the surgery has left him with damaged vocal cords. His wife says it’s unclear whether the damage to his voice is permanent. Last year, Buckingham was kicked off the Fleetwood Mac tour. He is suing his former band for part of the tour proceeds, saying he was able to perform.

NATIONAL ENQUIRER DISPUTES JEFF BEZOS’ EXTORTION CLAIM

WASHINGTON (AP) — A negotiation — not extortion or blackmail. That’s how the parent company of the National Enquirer describes its dealings with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Elkan Abromowitz reps David Pecker, head of American Media, which puts out the Enquirer. The lawyer tells ABC News what Bezos calls an attempted shakedown is just a standard legal negotiation. Abromowitz says he simply asked Bezos to say Enquirer stories about the affair that doomed his marriage weren’t politically motivated. In return, the Enquirer wouldn’t do any more stories on the subject. Bezos says the attempt to get a quid-pro-quo is a thinly veiled attempt at blackmail or extortion. The Enquirer supports President Donald Trump. And Trump has been critical of Bezos, the world’s richest man, because he owns The Washington Post — which has reported on things that have put his administration in a negative light.

LEGO MOVIE SEQUEL UNDERWHELMS AT BOX OFFICE

NEW YORK (AP) — Parents — you know that sharp pain you get in your foot when you accidentally step on a Lego block abandoned by your kid? That’s sort of what Hollywood is feeling after the sequel to the Lego movie franchise failed to meet expectations. “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” did win the box office race with $35 million in its debut weekend. But that’s shy of the $50 million it was expected to take in. It’s also half what the original did in its first week in theaters. Hollywood was banking on the Lego sequel to reverse a sluggish start to the calendar year. But in the end, Legos have stacked up to another blow to the effort to get people packing the multiplexes in big numbers.

BAFTA AWARDS

LONDON (AP) — Two of the presumptive favorites at the Oscars this year just got another boost to their reputations. Both “The Favourite” and “Roma” scored multiple wins at the British Academy Film Awards. The Favourite won seven BAFTAs, while “Roma” got four. Other winners yesterday include Rami Malek, who got best actor for playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Mahershala Ali for best supporting actor in “Green Book” — and Spike Lee for the adapted screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman.” The Oscars are a week from Sunday.

MICHAEL JACKSON ESTATE TRIES TO STOP AIRING OF DOCUMENTARY

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britain’s Channel 4 still plans to run that documentary about claims by two men that Michael Jackson abused them as boys. But the estate of the late pop star continues its push to have the plug pulled on it. The estate has sent a letter to Channel 4, written by estate attorney Howard Weitzman. It says “Leaving Neverland” is unfair for not including a response to the accusers from Jackson’s estate, family, friends or others. The letter is similar to one sent to HBO on Friday, calling the allegations against Jackson “disgraceful.” It also urged the network to investigate the men’s backgrounds.

DENMARK-MICHAEL JACKSON

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark’s oldest shopping mall has removed a wax statue of Michael Jackson out of fears it could offend customers and may be vandalized because of accusations that the late pop star molested boys. Charlotte Andersen, marketing manager for the Roedovre Centrum mall in suburban Copenhagen, told Denmark’s TV2 broadcaster that they had received about 15 complaints about the Jackson statue, mostly from families with children. The mall had announced an exhibition with wax statues of major stars, including Marilyn Monroe and Julia Roberts, to coincide with Danish schools’ weeklong winter holiday that started Monday. Jackson’s statue was replaced with one of Brad Pitt. The 75,500-square-meter (about 810,000-square-foot) mall was the first to open in Denmark in 1966.

HANDMAID’S TALE: RESISTANCE IS THE THEME FOR THIRD SEASON

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Resistance is the theme as “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns this summer with 13 episodes for its third season. Streaming service Hulu said Monday the dystopian drama will debut three new episodes on Wednesday, June 5. Other episodes will follow on subsequent Wednesdays. Hulu said this season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” starring Elisabeth Moss will focus on her struggle against the repressive regime of Gilead. Other characters will be forced to take a stand as well, with “blessed be the fight” the guiding prayer for rebels. Hulu also promised “startling reunions” and betrayals in the upcoming season. The Emmy-winning “The Handmaid’s Tale” is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. Its cast includes Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley.

HULU MAKING HOWARD THE DUCK AND 4 MORE MARVEL SHOWS

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Hulu is teaming with Marvel to make four separate animated series based on comic book characters like Howard the Duck. Director Kevin Smith and comics Chelsea Handler and Patton Oswalt are among the people who have signed deals with the streaming service to help produce the cartoons. Smith will work on the Howard the Duck series. Other shows revolve around M.O.D.O.K., a villain with an enormous head; Hit-Monkey, about a Japanese snow monkey turned assassin; and Tigra and Dazzler, two superheroes who work in Los Angeles. Hulu senior vice president Craig Erwich said Monday that animation is a particular favorite for its users. Since the deal was just signed, there’s no estimate on when the series will be ready.

A.J. CALLOWAY SUSPENDED FROM “EXTRA”

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Don’t look for A.J. Calloway on the entertainment news show “Extra” for a bit. He’s suspended by Warner Brothers, while his bosses investigate some “extra” allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The new probe centers on a yet-to-be-released article in The Hollywood Reporter. That report comes on the heels of investigations against Calloway in his dealings with women at work, which came up clean. Calloway’s lawyer says her client denies ever assaulting anyone — and looks forward to his name being cleared.

NEWSPAPER CARTOON SENDS VULGAR MESSAGE TO TRUMP

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — For at least one Sunday newspaper, the syndicated cartoon “Non Sequitur” was a non-starter — after the artist slipped in a vulgar suggestion to President Trump. In the strip, artist Wiley Miller scribbled a message in one panel that says Trump should do something to himself — something that’s anatomically impossible. The Butler Eagle in Pennsylvania says the shot at Trump cost Miller a spot in the comics section. It’s unclear whether other papers dropped — or will drop — the cartoon. Miller seems to acknowledge the not-so-hidden message in a tweet, calling it “a little Easter egg” found by some of his “sharp-eyed readers.”
