CIRTUS HEIGHTS, Calif. (AP) — The family of a 27-year-old woman who was severely injured after she was hit by a car while skateboarding says she is working hard to recover.

Kelly Cass’ family tells the Reno Gazette Journal that she faces weeks in intensive care at a hospital in Sacramento and months of rehabilitation after the Dec. 27 incident in which she was hit by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver.

“This was a horrific accident,” her sister Kayla Dowty told the newspaper. “But she is a really strong person. She is incredible and brave.”

The newspaper reports that Angel Diego Huerta, 27, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, felony hit-and-run, felony kidnapping and for violating parole, according to the Citrus Heights Police Department.

The Gazette Journal says that Cass’ family, which is based in Reno, Nevada, has set up a GoFundMe for medical expenses.
